The AFRITAC South (AFS) Steering Committee (referred to as the Steering Committee) is the committee designated to provide strategic guidance to the center and endorse its work program.

The first Steering Committee meeting took place in Mauritius, where AFRITAC South is located, on October 17, 2011. The second Steering Committee meeting will take place in about six months in Mauritius.

The Steering Committee consists of principal representatives (or their Alternates) from the AFS member countries, the IMF, and bilateral, regional, and multilateral development partners who have co-funded AFS. The current list of the representatives from development partners comprises: the African Development Bank, the Australian Government’s Overseas Aid Program (AusAID), the Brazilian Government, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Department for International Development (DFID) of the U.K. Government, the European Investment Bank, the European Union, the Indian Ocean Commission, and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of the Swiss Government.

Principal representatives from the AFS member countries and their alternates are appointed by the Central Bank and/or the Ministry of Finance in their respective countries. Representatives of development partners are designated by their respective organizations.

The main task of the Steering Committee is to give strategic guidance to the center, assist in setting its priorities, and endorse the AFS work plan. A draft annual work plan (May 1–April 30) will be prepared by the AFS Coordinator and Advisors, in consultation with their counterparts in member countries and IMF Area and Technical Assistance (TA) Departments. The draft annual work plan should be submitted to the Steering Committee for endorsement before April 1, at least two week prior to the Steering Committee meeting. Endorsement of the work plan will empower the AFS Coordinator to deploy TA resources that are directly available to the AFS.
